It is now time to put together a more complex, finished work that is composed of the technological capabilities of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign. During the assembly of this menu, you will become more familiar with the integrative capabilities of the various applications and how they work together to comprise a more finished product.

Parent Pages are pages used in Adobe InDesign that help distinguish between different sections of a publication (whether digitally distributed or print). Let's imagine for a moment that you wanted to create a Menu for a restaurant. A menu has different sections and pages to it:
  • Breakfast (the most important meal of the day)
  • Lunch Specials (to help get you over that hump)
  • Dinner (settling in for the night)
  • Desserts (because you're totally worth it)
  • Beverages (Something hot or cold to wash it all down)
  1. Create a new folder in your Communications 1 folder and title it “Adobe InDesign - Parent Pages 2
  2. Download these files into your folder:
  3. Create a new InDesign document and be sure to use “Letter” size under the “Print category”
  4. Create your layers so that they appear as so:
  5. Create new Parent Pages for the following categories (Be sure to make them single page Parent pages by right clicking on a page and select "Parent Options for Page _______" and then change the number of pages from 2 to 1)

Designing the Master/Parent Pages for each category

BREAKFAST

  1. Select the “Breakfast” Parent Parent Page by double clicking on it.
  2. Right click on the rulers at the top and side of the page and change them to “inches”
  3. Select the “Graphics” layer on your “Layers” panel
  4. Create a new rectangle using these settings:
  5.  Color the rectangle Yellow using these RGB values:
  6. Create a new text box using these settings:
  7. Inside the text box, type “BREAKFAST” using these font settings:

Your page should look like this:

Copy the Yellow rectangle and the Text box for breakfast

    LUNCH
  8. Select the “Lunch” Parent Page by double clicking it
  9. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and select “Paste in Place.” This will place yellow rectangle into the Lunch Parent Page
  10. Change the RGB color values of the yellow rectangle to these values instead:
  11. Change the text in the text box to “LUNCH”
Your page should look like this:

    DINNER
  12. Select the “Dinner” Parent Page by double clicking on it
  13. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and select “Paste in Place.”
  14. Change the RGB color value of the rectangle to these values instead:
  15. Change the text to say “DINNER” and change the color of the text to white.
Your page should look like this:

    BEVERAGES
  16. Select the “Beverages” Parent Page by double clicking on it
  17. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and select “Paste in Place.”
  18. Change the RGB color value of the rectangle to these values instead:

Change the RGB color value of the rectangle to these values instead:

Change the text color by using these RGB values:

Your page should look like this:

If done correctly, your Parent Pages (on your Parent Pages panel/palette) should look like this:

Save Your File as “Parent Pages Advanced”
We will set up the initial Parent Parent Pages at this point
  1. Double click on “Page 1” on the actual pages portion of the panel. Right click on page "1" and select "Apply Parent to Page" and then select "None." Your page should appear blank (just white).
  2. Select the “Text” layer and then “Place” the Breakfast.doc file into this page (be sure to Show Import Settings and then Remove Styles and Formatting from Text and Tables). Make sure all of the checkboxes at the top are unchecked. Also, make sure "Use Typographer's Quotes" is also unchecked.

  3. Use these settings for X and Y location, as well as Height and Width:

  4. Set your colums to 2, with a .5 inch spacing inbetween

Your page should appear as so (it may have the Breakfast Parent already applied. If so, that is alright).

  5. Create two new pages and “Place” this “dinner.doc” file into the pages, using these settings for both pages:
    First Page

    Second Page

  6. Set your columns to 2, with a .5 inch spacing in between
Your pages should appear as so:

Your panel should appear like this at this point:

  1. Create two new pages and “Place” this “lunch.doc” file into the pages, using these settings for both pages:

    First Page

    Second Page

You should now have five pages that appear like this:

Create two new pages and Place the desserts.doc file, using the exact same settings as before.

Your panel should now look like this:

Create two more pages and place the “beverages.doc” file into it. Your pages should look like this. Remember to remove the formatting for text and tables.

And, you should now have 9 pages

Save Your File!
We now have all of the pages populated with content. Now, we have to apply the Parent to those pages.
  1. Double click on page “1” on your panel. This will bring up our page with the breakfast contents on it. Now, right click on the page “1” thumbnail on the panel and select “Apply Parent to Pages.
  2. Use these settings:
Select “OK’

You will see that your Breakfast Parent Page has been applied.
Apply the Dinner Parent Page to pages “2” and “3”
Apply the Lunch Parent Page to pages “4” and “5”
Apply the Desserts Parent Page to pages “6” and “7”
Apply the Beverages Parent Page to pages “8” and “9”

Your panel should now look like this:

We need to format our text. There are two parts to the text. Their formatting is different
1) The menu item title – the actual name of the menu item someone would like to order
2) The menu item description – this tells the person ordering just how delicious ther menu item is.

  1. Create a new Paragraph Style and call it “Menu Item Title.” Double click on the Menu Item Style and use these settings:
  2. When you are done, click OK
  3. Now, make another Paragraph Style and title it: “Menu Item Descriptions”
    Use these settings:

Before we select “OK” we need to change the “Indents and Spacing.”

Also, make sure hyphenation is disabled by selecting “Hyphenation” on the sidebar and uncheck the “Hyphenate” box

Now, we can select “OK”

Here is the easy part (but somewhat time-consuming):

  1. Highlight each Menu Item Title in your InDesign document and then select “Menu Item Title” on your Paragraph Styles panel. This will change each title. Do this for all pages.
  2. Do the same with the descriptions, only this time using the “Menu Item Description” paragraph style. Make sure to do this for all pages.
  3. On the Beverages pages, apply the Menu Item Title to the “The Regular Drinks” and to the “Desert Drinks”  but apply the Menu Item Description to the actual brands and type of drinks.

That Oh-So-Lonely Text
Now, our Titles and Descriptions are all formatted. But, this provides us with a problem. If you look at your document, you will see that not all of our text is together. Check out the example below:

The title has been separated from its description text. Being that it is an imperfect world that we live in, it is sometimes difficult to accept the fact that what we’ want and what we get are two different things sometimes. So, we need to come to a compromise on occasion. This separation of text is known, in the industry, as “Widows” and “Orphans” (depending on how the text is split – “Widow“ if a single line of text appears at the top of a column and an “Orphan” if a single line of text is at the bottom of a column). We are dealing with an Orphan in the above example.

Look a little further through the page and you’ll spot this as well: A Widow

We need to adjust these so that they at least have some companion lines of text (at least two).
Double click on your Menu Item Description style and use these settings:

You may need to adjust a few lines of text (delete a line or two) in order to get the paragraphs to begin at the beginning of every column.

We need to spice things up a bit. This menu is kind of boring
  1. Download this file of a hamburger (clipart) to your “Adobe InDesign - Parent Pages 2” folder
  2. Select the Lunch Parent page and double click on it.
  3. Place the file of the Hamburger (clipart) in to your Parent page using these settings:

Your layers should look something like this:

Your Lunch Master Page should look like this:

Time for Breakfast!
Let’s do the same thing using the Breakfast Parent Page
Download this file of a breakfast sandwich to your “Parent Pages Advanced” folder
Place the file of the “Breakfast Sandwich” into your Parent page using these settings:

Since there is only one Breakfast page, only one page is actually affected by adding in our Breakfast Sandwich.
DINNER!
Now, let’s do the same thing using the Dinner Parent Page
Download this file of Steak Dinner (yummm) and then place it into your Parent Page using these settings:

Again, we see the image of the delicious steak (my apologies to vegetarians and vegans everywhere) on both of the Dinner pages.

DESSERTS FOR EVERYONE!
Do the same thing with Desserts, using this image of a “Key Lime Cupcake” (which isn’t even on the actual menu – but, we’re gonna use it anyways)
Place it in relatively the same position as we did before. You don't need to be exact.
Beverages
And, lastly, this nice cup of coffee. You’re free to place it in any position you like as well.

Save Your File!
  1. Double click on the Breakfast Parent page and create a new black rectangle, using these settings:
  2. Copy the black rectangle you just created and then use the “Paste in Place” feature on all of the Parent pages.
Now, all pages should have a black footer
  3. Double click on the Lunch Parent page and create a green rectangle that covers the entire page, but is underneath the footer, the hamburger and the original green rectangle in the layers panel
    Use these RGB values:
  4. Organize your layers like so:
  5. Repeat this process for the “Dinner” Parent page, using these RGB values for the rectangle:

Your page should appear like this:
  6. Repeat this process for Breakfast, using these RGB values:
  7. And, again, for Desserts, using these RGB values:
  8. And, finally, for Beverages, we use these RGB values:

  1. Download the file "allnighterdinerlogoblack.png" from here and save it to your "Adobe InDesign - Parent Pages 2" folder
  2. Download the file “allnighterdinerlogowhite.png” from here and save it to your “Adobe InDesign - Parent Pages 2 folder
  3. Double click on your Breakfast Parent page and place the “allnighterdinerlogoblack.png” file using these settings:

This looks great! But, the Breakfast header now collides with the logo of the diner. So, we need to do some adjusting.
  4. Select the text box for Breakfast and change the Y value to this:

This is how the header should now appear:
  5.
Do the same for all the category header text boxes on the other master pages (Lunch, Desserts, Beverages, Dinner)
Change the Desserts header text from black to be the same color of brown as the actual header. Do the same for Dinner and Beverages so that they look like this.

  6. Return to the Breakfast Parent Page and select the logo.
  7. Copy the logo and select the Lunch Parent page. Do a “Paste in Place” and InDesign will place the logo in the exact spot that you need it. Do the same for all Parent Pages.

These look really good. However, one some of the headers, they are a little dark and there is not enough contrast between the logo and the header color background. This is why we downloaded two versions of the header (one black and one white). We are going to switch out the logos on certain headers to have white instead of black.
  8. Double click on the Desserts Parent page
  9. Select the “All Nighter Diner” logo
  10. Open the “Links” panel under Window

Your links panel should look like this:

The logo for this particular Parent page is already selected. All we need to do at this point is right click on that link and choose “ReLink” (be sure to select the “allnighterdinerlogowhite.png” file. For the import options, simply hit “OK”

Notice how this changes out the black logo for the white one, but only on this individual Parent page. Do the same for the Beverages and Dinner pages

    Save Your File!
  1. Double click on the Menu Item Title paragraph style Under “Basic Character Formats” select “Underline.” This will put an underline under all menu item titles.
  2. Select page 9 (it should be a page with the Beverages Parent page associated with it)
  3. Select the text box for the beverages and change it's height to 4 inches. This will force the text to flow from one page to the other.
  4. Download this image of the “milkshake.png” and then place it into the “Dessert Drinks” side of the page, using these settings:

Drag the right side of the milkshake towards the left, so that it actually cuts the right side of the milkshake off (so that it aligns with the edge of the page like this:

Next, download the image of the “lobsterdinner.png” and place it in to Page “3”, using the same procedure and using these settings:

You will need to apply “Text Wrapping” around the Lobster Dinner

  5. Now, download the “friedchickenleg.png” file and place it into the Page 4 (a lunch page) using these settings;

You will need to apply “Text Wrapping” around the fried chicken leg

Finally, download the image of the “cakepops.png” and place it into Page 7, using these settings

Again, drag the right side inward so that it cuts the image of the white cake-pop off at the edge of the page. Now, do the same thing for the bottom of the image so that it cuts it square with the bottom of the page.
