You have been contracted to create a menu for a new local establishment known as "The All-Nighter Diner." This is a medium-grade food establishment not unlike Denny's, Bob Evans, and Cracker Barrell.

The owners are willing to pay handsomly for a nice menu but they are taking design ideas from different people. So, the design you are working on is in direct competition with other people who are also hopeing to land the account.

What the All-Nighter Diner needs from you:
  • A new logo that has a 1950's to 1970's look and feel
  • A fully designed menu
  • Text with their food items and descriptions
    • The owners want the Menu Item Descriptions indented from the Menu Item Titles
    • The owners like the 1950's to 70's style diner aesthetic (look and feel)
    • The Menu will have multiple pages (artboards)
    • The Menu will have a cover
    • The owners want all hyphens removed from the final menu (you can disable hyphens in Illustrator by selecting all the text and then choosing Type (under Window) and then selecting Paragraph. There is a little check box that says "Hyphens" - uncheck this item.
  • Graphics and Images of food items
    • The owners like the look where text flows around an image of the food (text wrap)
    • The owners want a consistent color theme between the log and the page boarders

Design the logo for The All Nighter Diner - Must be original (no plagarism / no AI)

Step 1: Sketch three thumbnails that you will share with your instructor

Step 2: Draw the "Rough" and share it with your instructor for final approval

Step 3: Create the Comp (Comprehensive) inside of Adobe Illustrator

The Menu has five pages total

  1. Cover
  2. Appetizers
  3. Breakfast
  4. Lunch and Dinner
  5. Desserts and Beverages

Create the Layout

The menu pages have these components:

  • Menu Categories
  • Menu Item Names
  • Menu Item descriptions
  • Images and Graphics

Menu Categories should be displayed at the top of the page (Appetizers, Lunch and Dinner, Breakfast, Desserts and Beverages)

Menu Item Names must be in bold type

Menu Item descriptions that accompany the Menu Item Name must be indented and in plain type

Images and graphics can be acquired off of the internet (I'm not going to force you to take a picture of a double cheeseburger - though that would be totally awesome).

In order for text wrapping to work, there are a few conditions that must be met.

  1. Text must be an actual Text Box and not just text pasted into Illustrator (To create a text box, use your text tool and draw a rectangle. Then, paste your text into the rectangle that you created with your text tool.)
  2. The outline (path) of your image must be created using the pen tool. Be careful to create your outline (path) so that it contours closely to your image.
  3. The outline (path) must be “in front” of the image and your text box. This outline cannot be part of a clipping mask or a group. So, if you need to create a clipping mask to isolate your image from a background, that is a separate process.
  4. Select your outline and then select Object from the Menu bar.
  5. Select Text Wrap and then select Make
  6. Once you have your Text Wrap created, you can use Text Wrap Options to modify the distance between the text and the actual text wrap, invert text wrap, etc.
